Our July Coffee Bark is this Saturday, July 10th from 9am-11am at St. Nick’s Dog Run. Come to the Dog Run and celebrate the beginning of summer with free coffee and donuts. Socialize with fellow dog owners and discuss issues and ideas on concerning St. Nicholas Park and St. Nick’s Dog Run.

Our Coffee Barks take place the first Saturday of every month from 9am-11am at the St. Nick’s Dog Run.

The St. Nick’s Dog Run is located in the middle of St. Nicholas Park between 136th and 137th streets. If you are interested in volunteering for the Coffee Bark, contact us at info@stnicholaspark.org

Please join The Children’s Art Carnival students and staff for our 2010 End-of-Year Exhibit and Silent Auction Benefit. The event will showcase works created by the wonderful, young artists participating in our Spring Cycle programs. In addition, Children’s Art Carnival Instructors and creative affiliates will be exhibiting art and other offerings through a Silent Auction; proceeds will benefit The Carnival’s programs.  Please join us in celebrating our awesome students, and support The Carnival by bidding on your favorite items!

Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens– Jimi Hendrix

West Harlem, NY …. The West Harlem Art Fund, Inc. and The City College of New York’s Division of Humanities and the Arts are hosting a daring exhibition in historic St. Nicholas Park — bringing contemporary art installations by new artists that mix history, community and landscape together for residents and New Yorkers alike. Public viewing begins June 16^th.

As apart of the college’s MFA program, a special “studio” was created last fall. Artists Scherezade Garcia and Marcie Revens were chosen from a panel to participate in the exhibition “In Dialogue”.  Historic St. Nicholas Park which slopes below the neo-gothic campus of City College was designed by George Browne Post and overlooks both West and Central Harlem.

The college’s motto: Respice (Past), Adspice (Present), Prospice (Future), suits this exhibition especially well. In result, this collaboration bridges new attitudes and forges bold artistic expressions.

The MFA program at The City College of New York provides an opportunity for students to study studio art in the heart of the art world — New York City. The City College of New York’s Division of Humanities & the Arts insures an intensive professional experience and affords students the opportunity to follow their creative vision in a collaborative environment. The MFA Program offers instruction in the theory, practice, and teaching of the visual arts through a required sequence of courses as well as in-depth training in one or more of the following areas of specialization: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, or ceramic design.

The West Harlem Art Fund, Inc. is a twelve year old, cultural arts and preservation organization. WHAF offers exhibition opportunities for artists and creative professionals wishing to share their talent with residents in Northern Manhattan and around the city. The West Harlem Art Fund, Inc. showcases art and culture in open, public spaces to add aesthetic interest to our part of the city; promote historical and cultural heritage; and support community involvement in local development. The NYC Parks website called Hey Walkies now has an iPhone app so dog owners can locate a dog run anywhere in the city. It was recently featured in an iPhone commercial. Our very own St. Nick’s Dog Run is on the map within the application. If you have some time, log-in to Hey Walkies and upload photos of your dog at St. Nick’s Dog Run! Show the NYC dog community how great our dog run community in St. Nicholas Park is!

An amazing website called The Origin of Species has chronicled sighting of Bald Eagles in Harlem and have up close-up photos of a Red-Tail Hawk in St. Nicholas Park. These, coupled with the recent sightings of coyotes in Morningside and Central Parks, make for an exciting winter in Harlem.

On Saturday, volunteers from the community came out to pitch in and help beautify St. Nicholas Park. The group helped clean up flower beds, plant spring bulbs and plant donated scrubs from a member of the Friend’s of St. Nicholas Park.

Thanks to everyone who came out from Fred Samuels office, Ms. Taft and her family and friends, and everyone from Esplanade Gardens. Special thanks Sybil Ward for coordinating our volunteer effort and to member Phil Spletzer and his family who donated the plants for It’s My Park! Day.
